Ōmura Sumitada

大村純忠

1533–1587
First Christian daimyō; opened and ceded Nagasaki
Also written: Ōmura Sumitada · 大村純忠
The Hizen lord who took baptism in 1563 as Dom Bartolomeu — the first daimyō to do so — and opened Nagasaki to the Portuguese ship in 1571. Nine years later he ceded the town to the Society of Jesus outright, the boldest of all the mission's bargains.
