Privacy & Cookies
What this site collects, the analytics and cookies it uses, and the choices you have.
Overview
Nanban.pt is a static website about the Nanban period. It has no user accounts and no login. The only personal data it handles comes from two analytics services and an optional newsletter, all described below.
Analytics and cookies
To understand how the site is used and to improve it, Nanban.pt relies on two third-party analytics services. Neither loads until you choose Accept analytics on the cookie banner; if you accept, both may set cookies:
- Google Analytics (Google Ireland Ltd.) measures aggregate traffic: which pages are viewed, approximate location, device and browser type, and the site that referred you.
- Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft Corporation) records anonymised on-page interaction — clicks, scrolls and mouse movement — and turns it into heatmaps and session replays that show how visitors move through a page.
Both are used for analytics only. Nanban.pt runs no advertising, does not sell your data, and does not use it to identify you personally. Neither service loads until you choose Accept analytics on the cookie banner; if you decline, or never choose, neither ever loads and no analytics cookies are set. See Your choices below.
The consent banner
The cookie banner is a genuine consent choice, not just a notice: analytics load only if you select Accept analytics, and Decline keeps them off. Your choice is stored in a first-party cookie (nanban_consent) for a year, shared across the English, Portuguese and Japanese versions, so you are not asked again. The consent cookie and your light/dark theme preference are strictly necessary and always on; clearing the nanban_consent cookie lets you choose again.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address is sent to Buttondown, the service that delivers it, and is used only to send Nanban.pt updates. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email.
Your choices
- Choose Decline on the cookie banner, so no analytics ever load; clear the nanban_consent cookie to be asked again.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
- Install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on to stop Google Analytics on every site you visit: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
- Use your browser’s private or incognito mode, which discards cookies when you close the window.
Disabling cookies does not affect your ability to read anything on this site.
Third-party services
These providers process the data described above under their own privacy policies:
- Google Analytics: policies.google.com/privacy
- Microsoft Clarity: privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement
- Buttondown (newsletter): buttondown.com/legal/privacy
