The shogun born to rule — the first raised from birth as heir — who finished what his grandfather began: the sakoku edicts, Dejima, the crushing of Shimabara, and the 1639 expulsion of the Portuguese were all his work. Japan's closure held for two centuries in the shape he gave it.
