Matsuura Takanobu

1529–1599
Daimyō of Hirado, the first host of the Portugal trade
Also written: Matsuura Takanobu · 松浦隆信
The lord who welcomed the Portuguese ships — and Xavier himself — to Hirado in 1550, hungry for the trade's silver and guns. Tolerant of the mission only as far as commerce required, he watched the carracks depart for rival ports after friction with the Jesuits, a loss his house would answer decades later by hosting the Dutch instead.
