Founder of the Dutch factory at Hirado

The VOC merchant who opened the Dutch factory at Hirado in 1609 and ran it, with one interruption, until 1621 — laying the foundations of the two-century Dutch monopoly that outlasted every rival. He later rose to Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies at Batavia.
