Matsunaga Hisahide

1508–1577
The Kyoto power-broker who tried to expel the first missionaries
Also written: Matsunaga Hisahide · 松永久秀
The warlord of Yamato who dominated the capital in the 1560s and moved to rid it of the new religion: in 1565, after the shogun's assassination, he procured the imperial decree banishing Vilela and Fróis from Kyoto. The scholars he had earlier sent to expose the missionaries converted instead — bringing the Takayama house into the church. He died spectacularly in 1577, defying Nobunaga.
