The red-seal captain burned for smuggling missionaries
Also written: Hirayama Jōchin · 平山常陳
Japanese Christian captain of a licensed red-seal ship seized by an Anglo-Dutch patrol in 1620 with two friars hidden among the passengers. The two-year investigation that followed handed the shogunate proof that missionaries were still slipping in through the trade itself; in August 1622 Jōchin was burned at Nagasaki with the friars, prelude to the Great Martyrdom weeks later.
