Sebastián Vizcaíno
1548–1624
The Spanish envoy whose arrogance soured Japan on New Spain
Also written: Sebastián Vizcaíno · セバスティアン・ビスカイノ
Explorer and ambassador from New Spain who reached Japan in 1611 to return Rodrigo de Vivero's courtesy — then spent two years surveying the Japanese coast for the fabled gold islands, refusing court etiquette and exhausting the shogunate's patience. Shipwrecked, he returned to Acapulco in 1613 aboard the San Juan Bautista, sharing the crossing with Hasekura's embassy.
