The One-Eyed Dragon who sent an embassy to the Pope
Also written: Date Masamune · 伊達政宗
Daimyō of Sendai, the north's great survivor, who built the galleon San Juan Bautista and despatched Hasekura Tsunenaga to Mexico, Madrid, and Rome in 1613 — the boldest Japanese diplomatic gamble of the century, launched even as the shogunate turned against the faith. When the answer came back empty, he enforced the ban in his own domain without sentiment.
